Nipah Virus (NiV) for GS

A zoonotic virus, Nipah is transmitted from animals to humans and can also be transmitted through contaminated fruits or directly by a sick person to others. It causes a range of illnesses from asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis. The virus can also cause severe disease in domesticated animals such as pigs, resulting in significant economic losses to farmers. Unfortunately, no cure or vaccine is known at present. Intensive care, quarantined symptomatic treatment and preventive measures are the only steps that we can take.
